Hormonal changes and hormone loss in women are most common in women and can be experienced throughout a lifetime. Hormone replacement therapy for women can help to improve health and quality of life. Hormones regulate many functions in the human body, including things such as weight gain, mood and sexual function. When hormones become imbalanced, women may experience symptoms such as hot flashes, low libido, vaginal dryness, weight gain, irregular periods, fatigue, insomnia and mood swings or depression. Healthcare providers are now able to offer hormone replacement therapies to improve symptoms related to these imbalances.

Hormonal imbalances in women can be frustrating and emotional, especially if left undiagnosed. Hormone replacement therapy can help to readjust hormone levels to normal levels to restore overall well being and physical and emotional health.

What do hormones do?

Both progesterone and estrogen are important hormones in a woman's body. In the reproductive cycle, estrogen causes the eggs to be released from the ovaries, while progesterone readies the uterus for implantation of the fertilized egg. As the number of eggs decreases throughout a woman's lifetime, so does the production of estrogen, leading to less estrogen in the body and more progesterone.

What causes hormones to become imbalanced?

Imbalances are caused when a woman's natural hormone production fluctuates, including during puberty, pregnancy and menopause. During puberty and pregnancy, influxes in certain hormones, which typically return to normal after puberty/pregnancy, can disrupt the normal function of the thyroid, leading to imbalances. During menopause, when a woman is nearing the end of her natural reproductive lifetime, the number of eggs decreases and so does the amount of estrogen her body produces, causing imbalances. This can result in pesky side effects, such as hot flashes, mood swings, and decreased sex drive.

What is hormone replacement therapy (HRT)?

HRT is a process that uses plant-based hormone supplements that resemble those found naturally in the human body. Healthcare providers determine which hormones are necessary and tailor the supplements to the individual's particular needs in order to achieve the best outcome for their patients. Common combinations include estrogen-only (usually for women who have had hysterectomies), cyclical (rotating estrogen and progesterone doses for women who are premenopausal), continuous (typically used to treat menopause), and local estrogen (for women experiencing vaginal dryness or other similar problems not associated with menopause/pre-menopause). These hormones can be delivered through creams, vaginal rings, tablets, or skin patches.

Is HRT safe?

Although initially tangentially linked to endometrial, breast, and ovarian cancer, further research has determined that the link is slight and that the benefits of HRT outweigh the risks. Recent studies suggest that HRT patients may experience improved muscle function, less skin aging, and lower risk of heart-related problems, as well as the decrease of other menopausal symptoms.

How do I know if HRT is right for me?

Women who may not be suitable candidates for HRT are those who have hypertension, blood clots, have had a stroke, have cancer, or have any other serious or uncontrolled medical condition. It also should not be used in women who are pregnant or plan to become pregnant. Of course, always consult with your doctor before starting or stopping any kind of hormone replacement therapy.
