What Is Andropause?

We would all love to be forever young and most people will do anything to maintain their youthful looks. Aging manifests differently in various genders and in most instances, hormones are affected as people age. As men grow older, testosterone levels naturally decrease. Testosterone is the hormone that is responsible for traditional male characteristics like hair growth, deep voices and other developments during growth, like increased muscle structure. As a man grows, testosterone increases until the age of around thirty, when the hormone begins to decrease from each decade onwards. This decrease in hormones is called andropause, also known as the male menopause.

In women, the decrease of hormones is much more rapid and by the time she is in her forties, she will likely have begun to experience a decrease in estrogen and the beginnings of menopause. The process is much slower in men, unlike women. For men, it can take as late as age fifty to start experiencing the symptoms of andropause. At this time, curiosity about what symptoms to look for to determine whether andropause is being experienced may start. Sometimes medical diagnosis may be necessary to establish whether one has reached andropause. Here are some of the symptoms to look out for.

Low Sex Drive

Unlike women, men are known to be sexually active for a long time. Because the decrease of testosterone is gradual and sometimes doesn’t diminish until their fifties, they still enjoy a high sex drive. This happens mostly because of low bioavailable testosterone. This is the type of testosterone that remains available for use by the body during andropause. When the bioavailable testosterone reduces, then most men will often begin to experience low sex drive. The other thing that will be experienced is erectile dysfunction. The erection might fail or be very weak.

Lack Of Energy

Testosterone is responsible for the building of muscles in men. This is why younger men mostly in their late teens to thirties are much stronger than those in their fifties. Also, this hormone is needed in a masculine body for one to be energetic. Since this hormone decreases greatly with the increase in age, most men are likely to be more fatigued. This also leads to loss of strength and a decrease in muscle mass.

Increased Body Fat

During andropause, the male body is undergoing hormonal imbalance. The low testosterone produced triggers fat particularly around the stomach area. This can be naturally dealt with if one exercises frequently, otherwise lack of exercise can lead to obesity. In general, the decrease in testosterone greatly affects the male body. Some men will even realize that with age, more so past the age of fifty, they become grumpy. If you are a man above fifty and you have been experiencing some of these symptoms it could be the onset of andropause and with some consultation, you can gain back more quality of life by addressing the symptoms.

Testosterone can be administered by injection, capsule, patch or gel and requires time and careful attention to develop the right routine and dosage for your unique situation. Adding hormone therapy treatment to your daily routine, along with healthy lifestyle changes, can relieve many of the symptoms that come along with andropause. Hormone therapy can help to restore energy and wellbeing so that you can look and feel your best.
